FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make a referral or book an appointment?
You can get in touch via our contact form, by email at welcome@myndpsychology.ie.
If you aren’t sure about the type of assessment or service you need, you can book an initial appointment with one of our psychologists to discuss the most meaningful pathway for you or your child.
Do you offer online sessions?
Yes, we offer video therapy sessions for therapy and parent or adult consultations.
Assessment sessions are conducted face to face in our clinics in Bayside or Malahide.
Online sessions are the same duration and fee as face-to-face sessions.
We use a secure, encrypted video platform.
Are assessments covered by health insurance?
In some cases, psychological therapy sessions may be partially reimbursed through private health insurance, depending on your policy.
All clinicians at Mynd Clinical Psychology are doctoral-level Clinical Psychologists and are Chartered Members of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI). This means their qualifications and professional standards have been independently verified, which is typically required by insurers for reimbursement.
We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to confirm your level of cover.
Are your reports recognised by HSE services?
Yes. Our assessments and reports are aligned with recognised professional and clinical best practice guidelines used in Ireland.
Reports are completed by Clinical Psychologists who are Chartered Members of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) and are suitable for use in discussions with schools, GPs, HSE services, and other relevant professionals where appropriate.
How does the assessment process work for my child?
Although each assessment is tailored to the individual child, the process generally includes:
- Initial consultation – meeting with parents to understand your child’s developmental history, strengths, and current concerns.
- Assessment sessions – your child attends one or more sessions involving structured tasks and activities to understand thinking, learning, attention, and social development.
- Information gathering– questionnaires or information from parents, schools, or other professionals may be included.
- Clinical formulation and report – results are carefully integrated to develop a clear understanding of your child’s profile.
- Feedback session – we meet with you to discuss the findings and recommendations, and a written report is provided.
Do you accept health insurance?
Some health insurance providers offer partial cover for psychology sessions. We recommend checking with your provider directly. We provide receipts that you can submit for reimbursement where applicable.
How long does an assessment take?
Assessment timelines vary depending on the type. A child autism or ADHD assessment typically involves 2–3 appointments over several weeks, plus a feedback session. Adult assessments may differ. We’ll outline the full process at the outset.
How long does the assessment process take?
The timeline varies depending on the type of assessment, but most comprehensive assessments involve:
- an initial consultation
- one or more assessment sessions
- questionnaires or collateral information
- a feedback meeting and written report
Reports are typically provided within approximately four weeks after the assessment sessions are completed.
Will I receive a written report?
Yes. All assessments include a comprehensive written report outlining the assessment findings, clinical understanding, and practical recommendations.
Reports are written to help individuals, families, and where appropriate schools or other professionals better understand the person’s strengths, needs, and supports that may be helpful.
Are your assessments neurodiversity-affirming?
Yes. Our approach recognises that people think, learn, communicate, and experience the world in many different ways.
Assessments aim to understand each individual’s profile of strengths, differences, and support needs, rather than viewing neurodevelopmental differences through a ‘disorder’ lens.
Our goal is to support greater understanding, self-advocacy, and access to meaningful supports.
What if my child (or I) do not receive a diagnosis after assessment?
An assessment is not simply about confirming a diagnosis.
The process aims to develop a clear and meaningful understanding of the individual’s experiences, strengths, and areas of difficulty. Even when a diagnosis is not given, the assessment can still provide valuable insights and practical recommendations that may help guide supports at home, in school, or in daily life.
How do I know if my child might benefit from an Autism or ADHD assessment?
A screening usually involves brief questionnaires or short appointments that indicate whether further assessment may be helpful.
A comprehensive assessment is more detailed and typically includes clinical interviews, standardised assessments, questionnaires, careful clinical formulation, and a written report with recommendations. This provides a much fuller understanding of an individual’s profile and support needs.
How do therapy sessions work for children?
Therapy with children is typically play-based, creative, and developmentally appropriate.
Sessions may involve activities such as drawing, storytelling, games, or structured therapeutic exercises that help children explore feelings, develop coping strategies, and build emotional understanding. Parents are often involved in parts of the process so that strategies can be supported at home.
How do therapy sessions work for adults?
Adult therapy involves collaborative conversations aimed at understanding experiences, patterns, and challenges.
Sessions may focus on exploring current difficulties, understanding underlying patterns, developing practical coping strategies, and building insight and self-understanding.
Why do comprehensive psychological assessments cost what they do?
Comprehensive psychological assessments involve significantly more work than the assessment sessions themselves.
In addition to the time spent meeting with a child, adult, or family, our psychologists complete detailed preparation, scoring and interpretation of standardised assessments, integration of information from multiple sources, and preparation of a comprehensive report
At Mynd Clinical Psychology, our assessments are designed to provide a well-rounded understanding of the whole person. This typically includes consideration of cognitive functioning, emotional wellbeing, adaptive functioning, and relevant developmental or life experiences within a trauma-informed and formulation-based framework.
This approach allows us to develop the most meaningful understanding of an individual’s experiences, rather than approaching assessment as a simple checklist of symptoms. The aim is to provide thoughtful, integrated recommendations that genuinely support the individual and those around them.
What age can children be assessed from?
Children can typically be assessed from preschool or early school age, depending on the type of assessment and the questions being explored.
If you are unsure whether an assessment would be appropriate for your child at this time, we are happy to discuss your concerns and help determine the most suitable next steps
Can schools use psychological reports?
Yes. Psychological reports can often help schools better understand a student’s learning profile and support needs.
Reports may be useful when discussing educational supports, accommodations, or learning strategies with teachers and school support teams.
How do I arrange an appointment?
You can contact us through the website enquiry form or by email, and we will guide you through the next steps, including discussing suitability for assessment or therapy and current appointment availability.
